I purchased this unit strictly to manage my OTA HD programming, the features like season pass, TIVO learning my viewing preferences are outstanding.I will focus on the other attributes to this unit, once properly connected to your home router (easy just plug it in) you will be connected to your PC and able to:- stream MP3 to your home audio system, provided the unit is connected to it.- view pictures from your pc to your television.- minor upgrade ($24) will enable home video, simply put just add video's such as vacation etc to a folder and it will automatically be in your viewing list in HD.- I spend alot of time on my computer, the ability to simply add recordings from the yahoo tv listing is a real nice to have.The above eliminate all the headaches associated with pc -> home theatre, not to mention all the other TIVO attributes outlined in the other reviews.I got the lifetime and suggest anyone buying these do the same, the one time hit is a bit painful but once out of the way you'll just love this unit.I'm in Canada so do not have the benefit of Netflix, Amazon Video, but Utube and others are nice to have. If you have never had TIVO you don't know what your missing, these units are incredible when it comes to managing your viewing preferences.If your reading this, buy the thing, you will not be disappointed. Everything is very easy to setup, their customer service is very good, well worth the investment. A significant part of this is the lifetime fee so buy the TiVo TCD658000 HD XL Digital to avoid having to upgrade.
i love the tivo hdxl. the reboot time is also a negative (it takes about 5 minutes to restart before you are able to use the tivo). unfortunately the only way to listen to itunes purchased music is to convert it to mp3 format. the most important things to me are storage space and reliability. the shipping time from buy.com was excellent. tivo hdxl offers a huge amount of storage space and so far has been very reliable. i had a comcast dvr for 5 years prior to buying the tivo and the tivo offers far more features than the comcast dvr ever did. i really like being able to listen to my entire music collection from the tivo over my home network but it would be even better if the tivo supported the native itunes format.
i love the netflix streaming feature and have had pretty good success with it so far. the only negatives i have to say about this product are it occasionally freezes up and the only way to fix it is to do a hard reboot (pull the power plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in). overall i am very pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend it over the standard cable company dvr. i received my tivo 3 days after ordering it and i didn't pay any extra for faster shipping.
I really miss my ReplayTV. Also, I can now rent movies from Amazon really easily, as long as Amazon doesn't make too many more deals with production companies to withhold streaming. It had a few really good features on it. But it wasn't HD. I have thoroughly enjoyed my Tivo HD and no problems yet. It's a great buy.
We got this as a gift over Christmas and have used it non-stop since. We cut cable and just went with the antenna and this has been the perfect solution to not have to watch shows we miss on the internet. Also the "TiVo suggestions" are great for those times when it seems nothing is on. I highly recommend this product for all antenna or cable users.
Amazon has been very responsive to customer concerns and returns on this matter, and I couldn't speak more highly of the Tivo service on working units. The primary reason that I am posting this information is to save others the extraordinary amount of time that I have wasted in configuration and set-up of each of these new boxes and only then to learn that the problem has no fix.
Unfortunately, there is a known manufacturing defect in Tivo HD XL units currently in stock, (affecting units manufactured since November 2009). I recently purchased a new HD XL DVR and was forced to return it and then a replacement unit that followed due to manufacturing defects.
I am a huge Tivo fan and have owned multiple units in the past, so it disappoints me to have to report this. The problem manifests itself in a soft-reboot freeze which renders the unit incapable of passing the initial "Welcome Screen", or undertaking routine software updates without manual intervention (ie, future updates will lock up the unit and your programming will likely not be available until you hard re-boot it).
There are now multiple reports in the Tivo support forums documenting the issue (see links below). Tivo technical support (level 2) confirms the issue, but has no current solution, and Tivo is no longer replacing defective units which suggests the issue is widespread.
Tivo customer service technical support has very little information on the problem besides acknowledging that it exists.Unfortunately, Tivo has neither recalled the units from inventory nor proposed any solutions at this time. I hope and expect that Tivo identifies a solution here, but I suggest that potential purchasers seek updated information.[.].
